College Board PR Disaster December 18, 2013 The College Board sent out stickers of cows to high school counselors. So weird. Were glad to hear that the College Board is doing good things in the world. Ok, we might be being a little facetious. Recently, the College Board sent out a mass mailing to high school counselors that included cow stickers. Multicolored cartoon cow stickers three dozen of them. Thats right. The College Board, a nonprofit in name, is wasting its money on cow stickers. In a letter to school counselors, the College Board wrote, Dear educator, Your students participated in the PSAT/NMSQT, along with 3.6 million other students, and had a great time taking the test. Please help distribute these stickers, and thank you! Sincerely, The College Board. Seriously? In all of our years working in the business of highly selective college admissions, we have never met one student not one student who had a great time taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Are they serious? And why would high school students want multicolored stickers of cows? Do they think that the majority of PSAT test-takers are six years of age? Oy vey. Many school counselors didnt believe that this mailing could be real, that it likely came from an imitator of the College Board. But why would anyone waste their time and money on this? A non-profit should surely be more fiscally responsible than choosing to waste their time and money on cow stickers. What do you think of this College Board PR disaster? According to an article on the College Board in The Chronicle of Higher Education, The College Board’s goal, the spokeswoman said, was to recognize the student experience while reminding them of the organization’s free college-planning resources.  The back of each sticker bears a message that includes the following: Who would have thought cows could be so inspiring? We hope that the PSAT is always this fun.' Absolutely ridiculous. Thats all weve got to say about that.

The Importance of Respect in John Steinbecks Cannery Row Cannery Row is a novel John Steinbeck wrote after World War I. At first, the novel almost seems like a humorous book, written in a style commonly used by Steinbeck. The book has its main plot, but also has side chapters that periodically interrupt the main idea, which adds to the story. One would think that these side chapters are there to universalize the book, but in fact that is not true. The side chapters tell their own story, and they have a message that Steinbeck was clearly trying to show through his book. The novel has a main point about respect. In Cannery Row , Steinbeck is trying to say that respectability is the destructive force that preys on the world. He felt that he should make fun of him to keep his self respect (19). Both of these incidents illustrate that a person may be driven to uncomfortable, frightening and even suicidal lengths to keep up a front. These two characters were made fun of, laughed at and branded as different. They were not respected in any way, which Steinbeck clearly shows. The plot of the novel begins to become clear in the next few chapters. This is where Mack and his gang of friends are introduced. Mack and the boys were homeless; until one day when an abandoned fish food storage house was given to them. They loved the house for its protection from the weather. The boys put furniture, posters, beds, a stove and even some flowers in and around their house. Their house gave them a since of pride. In their minds they sneered at unsettled people who had no house to go to (34). They now felt more respect and pride in society. Doc is also introduced in these chapters. Doc is one of the most respected people in town. He runs a laboratory called Western Biological and through the years he had became the fountain of philosophy, science and art in Cannery row. In September of 1982 seven people from Chicago died after taking Tylenol capsules. Tylenol was the leading pain-killer medicine in the United States at the time. It was reported that an unknown suspect put 65 milligrams of deadly cyanide into Tylenol capsules. It was assumed that the tampering occurred once the product reached the shelves. They were removed from the shelves, infected with cyanide and returned to the shelves (Mitchell 1989). In 1982, Tylenol controlled 37 percent of its market with revenue of about $1.2 million. Immediately after the cyanide poisonings, its market share was reduced to seven percent (Mitchell 1989).
